Bait and Tackle

Solder is used in bait and tackle primarily for making and modifying lures Bait and Tackle Sign, weights, and tackle components. Below are some of the commonly used application.

Lure Making and Modification

  • Adding weight to lures: Solder can be melted and applied to hooks or lures to adjust their buoyancy or sinking speed.

  • Creating custom jigs or spinners: Anglers often use solder to join wire components or secure parts like blades and beads to form custom spinnerbaits or jigs.

Repairing or Reinforcing Gear

  • Solder can be used to repair broken metal parts (e.g., wire arms on spinnerbaits, or looped ends of leaders).

  • It can also reinforce weak points, like where wire is twisted or joined.

Making Sinkers or Weights

  • Although lead is more common, solder (which is often lead-based) can be melted and poured into molds to create small fishing weights for finesse fishing applications.

Mayer Alloys provides alloys for Jigs, Splits, Sinkers, and Cannon Balls. Typically materials include pure lead and antimonial lead alloys both available in bar and wire form.
