Plumbing Solder and It's Applications

Soldering copper pipesPlumbing solder is a metal alloy used to create strong, leak-proof joints between copper pipes and fittings—a critical component in both residential and commercial plumbing systems. Because these systems often carry potable (drinking) water, the quality and safety of the solder directly impact water purity and health. When heated, plumbing solder melts and flows into pipe joints through capillary action, forming a durable seal that prevents leaks and withstands years of use. Its reliable bonding properties make it an essential material for repairing leaking copper pipes, installing or extending water supply lines, connecting shutoff valves, faucets, or hose bibs, and plumbing for new construction or renovation projects. Whether you’re fixing a small drip or installing a full copper line, using the right solder ensures long-lasting performance and compliance with plumbing safety standards

Plumbing Solder Alloys and Forms

Plumbing solder products include lead-free and lead-based alloys, as well as solder wire and solder bars. Wires are available in solid wire or with flux (rosin core, or acid core) and in various diameters.  The most common diameter is .125″ or 1/8″.  Bars are also offered in a variety of sizes and weights.  Below are some examples of the solder alloys used in plumbing.

  • 50Sn/50Pb
  • 95Sn/5Sb
  • 97Sn/3Cu
  • Caulking Lead

Copper pipes are used throughout residential and commercial properties for plumping purposes. As a result, the U.S. Safe Water Drinking Act requires that lead-free plumbing solder be used on potable water lines, or pipes that carry drinking water. Mayer Alloys offers lead-based and lead-free alloys appropriate for use within the plumbing industry. Our high quality and high purity plumbing solder and lead products are designed for use on potable water systems and plumbing repairs, as well as work on new construction, water and sewage.
