Properties of Lead

  • Atomic Number: 82
  • Symbol: Pb
  • Density: 11.34 g/cm³ (very dense!)
  • Melting Point: 327.5°C (621.5°F)
  • Boiling Point: 1,749°C (3,180°F)

Material and Industrial Benefits Lead and Lead Alloys

  • Corrosion Resistance – Resists corrosion, making it great for pipes, roofing, and chemical tanks.
  • High Density – It’s very dense, so it’s excellent for radiation shielding (e.g., in hospitals or nuclear facilities).
  • Malleability – Lead is soft and easy to shape, so it’s useful in applications where flexibility is needed.
  • Low Melting Point – It melts at a low temperature (327.5°C), making it easy to cast into molds.
  • Sound Insulation – Due to its density, it helps block sound, so it’s sometimes used in soundproofing.
  • Electrical Properties – Lead is used in batteries (especially lead-acid batteries) due to its electrochemical properties.

Common Uses

  • Batteries: Most notably in lead-acid batteries
  • Radiation Shielding: In medical and nuclear environments
  • Ammunition: Due to its density and malleability.
  • Alloys: Often mixed with other metals to create solder or pipes.
  • Soundproofing and Vibration Dampening: Due to its weight and acoustic properties.
